"It feels like I’m breaking the waves at the edge of the sea,” proclaim's Tara MacLean, on her long-awaited forthcoming LP, Deeper. It’s been more than a decade since she’s released original material, 2008’s Wake. In that time, she made a triumphant return to her East coast roots via 2017’s Atlantic Blue, a concept covers album brought to life in a multi-dimensional stage show with successful runs the last two summers in Charlottetown, PEI. Yet, this nostalgic homage to her fellow East coast icons was nothing near a swan song for MacLean, who showcases her finest singing and songwriting to date on this new 12-track outing. On the contrary, this collection illustrates a whip-smart woman in her prime, armed with a reckoning of emotional intelligence and human catharsis to declare. The subject matter is classic MacLean—deep dives into the human condition, spun into accessible songcraft, driven by her impossibly beautiful, soft, strong voice. Yet, with this release, she’s wiser, more evolved, and even more comfortable sharing exactly what’s on her mind—all to the benefit of the listener, both newcomers who will be instantly sold on her talents, and longtime fans, deeply starved for more of what she is known to serve up. What makes this group of songs even more impressive is the fact that this is MacLean’s first time at the helm of the control boards. She produced the album, with co-producing credit going to her collaborator, Dennis Ellsworth. This claim-stake is fitting for an artist of her caliber--in the prime of her life and career--and to great benefit of the songs themselves and, ultimately the listener, who will undoubtedly feel compelled to sail along with Maclean on the voyage she charts. Deeper comes ashore on June 23.  - Brian Morris
